I played in several bands growing up, took piano instruction for 12 years, performed in master classes, and accompanied and sang in many choirs through high school. While working toward my electrical engineering degree I stopped out to work with a live band full time. It was great fun that also helped me with an application for all the things I was learning in school. But eventually Engineering seemed like a safer bet for providing a way of living.
Early on in my career I did have the opportunity do field support for Studio Mastering Recording Tape. I think of this time as the ‘glory days’ of music recording. I had the pleasure of working in the largest major market studios across the US. These studios with their amazing live rooms, massive consoles, synchronized multitrack recorders and a pedigree of legendary performances left a mark on me. Over time, technology changes and decreased label funding for music development drove a huge reduction in the large studio market and small project and home studios emerged. As you are probably aware the speed and price of disc based recording killed the tape markets which drove me back to the business of corporate IT.
Still recording whenever I had the chance along the way, I have continued to work over the years with audio technology and with friends who have similar interests. From basements, theaters, schools or wherever we could lug equipment, the joy of the recording lives on with me.
At Square Inch Recording we feature many familiar tools including Pro Tools, Wavelab, Universal Audio interface and pre-amps, Neumann, Izotope, Fabfilter and UA plugs, Yamaha Motif, Arturia, Trilian, Superior Drummer, Roland electronic drums, some classic old Arp, Roland, and E-Mu synths as well as a collection of acoustic and electric guitars. We believe this project space provides a flexible environment that can meet both the desire to create, and capability to produce.
